Hi guys!

So I updated my website - just streamlined it to include all the relevant links and access to places i regularly post to and use! I had my old site sat there not doing a great deal so I thought i'd put it to use as more of a hub. The old one was very clunky and way too full of info - it was primarily used whilst i was looking for employment. Its quite easy to lose sense of direction on the internet these days! Check it out - much appreciated!

Also I finally caved and made a facebook page for my art - i'll be posting there as well as updates on projects and goings on. If you like my art and want to stay up to date it'd much appreciated if you gave it a like/follow - thanks!

Hi guys!

So over the years, ive noticed a fair few of you guys who follow me are gamers and sci fi fans -well the company I work at has just started a Kickstarter project for a sequel to the eponymous epic, spacebattling and trading Elite - and is looking for backers to get behind it and get early perks!

The bbc article on the game is here:

And the Kickstarter is here!

So help see the game come to light - I promise i'll do the best i can on my part to make it good! :D

Hi!

Im off to Paris for a week next week, for my first time, as a treat for my girlfriend for our 5 year anniversary - does anyone have any recommendations for little known places to eat or visit, or indeed any general tips? I'd love to hear any experiences people have had whilst visiting there - i'm muchos excited!

Thanks!

... allegedly, and a contributing factor to that is apparently the inability to keep new years resolutions past this point!

So yeah, i aint doing Iceberg Letters. It ain't happening. I've got zero discipline and i get distracted by shiny stuff. Also, sometimes I just want to draw every day for 2 weeks, sometimes I dont want to at all for a week. And ive reached the point in my life where the things I do need to be fun. And trying to do something im not really feeling isn't fun. Not to mention sometimes, one week, you'll just hang out with mates a whole bunch.

Ah well. BUT! My work will be affected by the drive that made me want to start it in the first place. We'll see. I'm mostly all talk, no walk :D

PS, Super Metroid is wicked

Hi!

FF7 Blog Readdress and Rename

First thing is quick and easy. Seeing as I probably misjudged my ff7 blog by having my own opinion stated as fact in the title of the blog, i've renamed it! whyiloveff7.blogspot.com

(ive also added a new entry, for anyone who missed it, that actually talks about the game and not just my experience of it as was the first one.) I intend to make it so that its as much of an elaborate exploration and explanation into why I love it as I possibly can do. It's a bit of fun :) For what its worth, the point isn't trying to convince people that FF7 is good, the point is to actually celebrate a passion rather than trolling on other people. The internet can be a very negative place and rather than moan about it and talk about how to fix it i'd sooner fix it by just being positive. If you dont like FF7, thats totally cool and youre probably right - but i do! I'd like to celebrate something in the world I think is good. I'd encourage everyone to do the same about the thing they like.

Iceberg Letters

The second thing being that last week I decided to put One Last Chance on hold - again. Not like it hasnt been anyway as its been 8 months since I last posted an entry, but I'm officially postponing it now. Ive gone through 2 sketchbooks of planning and 100 pages of attempts to try and draw the next part and it's not going anywhere. It's passable but I really have no confidence. The amount that I draw is not reflected in the amount that I show to the public so I'm starting a new project for the next year to address that - called Iceberg Letters. The idea of it is that I do 52 short stories that practice my story telling skills and visualisation, one a week, and offer an exciting glimpse at a fuller story. Theres literally no limits (outside my own limitations) as to what I will try and take on. Expect a full spectrum of moods, tones, themes, and naratives! It's going to be FUN! (for me! and hopefully you guys will enjoy them too)

I'm not going to pretend I havent tried doing big projects before and they've gone nowhere. That's mainly because I've been aiming for a finished product that i'm not equipped to fulfill. Also, my mood changes all the time - sometimes i think pencil is the best thing ever, sometimes digital, sometimes oil paints, other times ink. So its very hard to stay consistent on a project. By doing bit size bits, I have the freedom to abide to my whims.

Gaming

I've gone absolutely gaming batshit. In the last 4 weeks i've aquired 60 games. No joke. Some of them the rarest games available. I've got a lot of holes in my gaming history, and a lot of my favourite games I previously didnt own any longer (now I do!). My N64, SNES and Dreamcast collection are not almost 100% complete. I'm v excited!

Thanks for reading, see you aboot

So I'm coming back - I have UNFINISHED BUSINESS here at deviantART. Thou hast been warned!

This Christmas I bought myself 2 new consoles - SNES and N64 - and was given generously by a friend my favourite console of time - the Dreamcast! Over the last few weeks, through a combination of gifts, rescues and purchases I own every game I want to own for all those 3 consoles, as well as all controllers (yes, thats 10 controllers). There are a few missing links ... (for example, I have Skies of Arcadia on the Gamecube instead of DC, and Shenmue 2 on xbox not DC), but i'm all kitted up. Quite a lot of the stuff i've bought i've not played (or maybe just fiddled with at a friend's, or had a quick go on a ROM - WHICH DOESNT COUNT), so im overfilled with excitement. I hosted a house party after getting my SNES and DC and seeing the joy on jaded gamers faces, games they hadnt played before, makes me well up with pride that it wasnt just nostalgia that made me look at new games with a raised eyebrow, they genuinely arent as fun!

Over the last year I have become a massive, massive gamer again. I've virtually denounced Microsoft (despite having sided with them in 2001 with the demise of the Dreamcast), and found, shockingly, my real home is Nintendo - or indeed, maybe just Japan. It's not a retro thing, its a quality thing - I just think the Japanese know/knew how to make fucking amazing games!

And I want to make a change. And luckily I find myself in a position where I can best empower that need for change - to make a stand for all gamers who have been left behind, forced to accept dross in place of pure fun!

So anyway. No point to this update per se. Just this is a overflow of the last 28 years of me figuring out who the hell I am, and now confidently stepping forward knowing that and also more importantly, what I'm not.

There are sweeping changes happening in my sketchbook ... maybe the accumulation of years worth of intense personal study and development, but whatever reason, its happening. I'm excited to see how quick the takeover will be. I feel everything is turning on its head but for the first time im not apprehensive - im excited, more than i've ever been. I won't be uploading everything that I ever do - I'm not quite sure how it will manifest but I will go with whatever feels right - and whatever feels fun.

Hi!

I've started a new blog, to finally combat the bugging need to have out there somewhere a comprehensive breakdown of why FF7 is so good - i'd love to have your input, so leave a comment, drop me a note and share with any other ff7 fans! I hope you enjoy, and it should be great fun - thanks. The link is below!

Hi guys!

Just letting you know that i've updated the onelastchance site. Thats now where i'll be posting it exclusively. I've decided not to directly post it up onto her on deviantART after all. Instead, i'll post when i update it!

For now part one is available, but be sure to check out the site and bookmark it, and if youre feeling kind and you like it, an FB like and tweet would be awesome and much appreciated! I'm doing this totally for free in my spare time and relying 100% on word of mouth to get the project out and seen so any help by you guys would be brilliant!

For anybody who cant be bothered to read (and also cos i tend to ramble and lose my focus) - heres the short of it.

I got a new blog where i'll be doing everything from now on:

martinhoulden.blogspot.com/

I'll still be posting my art here on deviantART but keeping it to-the-point.

For everyone who is interested, here is the rest of it!:

Hello all - watchers new and old!

Firstly - I'm not leaving. However, I do have some things to say ...

It's no doubt been so long since I really connected with deviantART that most people who would be likely to read this aren't aware that I have actually been here for over 7 years - crazy! And in that time a lot has happened!

But since maybe 2006, I've not really felt that at-home here. And thats not to do with the site - thats just do with me changing as a person and the way I interact with stuff. I used to write journals here quite frequently, but havent done so for a long time, and ive been quite confused about where my 'art' lies. Which sounds like a minor thing but it really isnt.

When i first started taking drawing seriously I would post to an online forum called Fantasy Fighters - a bunch of keen artists would sit around, draw stuff, scan it in and then post it up for us to look at and get inspired/competitive over. And then deviantART came along and it was like that forum but x100 - with loads of incredible artists all over the place!

But then things got a little weird. When I went to uni I got completely confused by what art IS - having to look at my work from a professional angle kind of killed a lot of enthusiasm in me. I felt I should put on a professional face to everything and deviantART has always since felt a little silly.

Which I really should state - its not. I think, regardless of what some people say it is an absolutely fantastic place and whilst ive had criticisms of it in the past, I think it is genuinely one of the most worthwhile places on the internet for artists, startup and professional. Whilst I could complain about its monetisation and attempts to turn it into a brand in recent years, it's still a better option than having it close down!

So I'm not leaving, but I have to face a hurdle that has been getting in the way for a while now and that is - how do I connect with the internet in a way that is on my terms, but is not distant and solitary?

Well the answer has come not through my own solution, but through acceptence of terms - mainly that it is now very commonplace for people to do their internet business mostly through certain outlets - namely blogs n twitter.

My project One Last Chance is being rebooted over at my new blog, and whilst I will still be posting my speedpaints and general art here, my real intimate stuff, musings and projects will be over there.

So I recommend that if you want to follow my work that you stick a bookmark on martinhoulden.blogspot.com/ or follow it, or add me on twitter to keep updated. Everything I do on deviantART from now on will be a purely functional thing - so i'll still be sharing my art!

But my project One Last Chance has been way to affected by people's opinions on here. How many favourites it gets etc, even though I have tried not to let it do so it can't be fought. I have to do things the way I think it should be done - my ideals - the way I used to when I started out and loved art - rather than trying to second guess people all the time.

You've been a great bunch guys and I'll still be around here. This is actually a very good thing as it is now clear in my head how i can get the spark back into my enthusiasm for art and i'd love to have all of your support!

All the best - and hopefully to the start of something exciting!

Martin
